The Buddy Bench - A Simple Way to Promote Inclusion on the Playground

Sometimes it is the simplest ideas that are the most effective. This is certainly the case with the Buddy Bench.  Second-grader, Christian Bucks, saw the idea for the Buddy Bench in a German brochure when his family was contemplating moving overseas.  His family did not end up moving abroad and instead he brought the idea to his elementary school principal who assisted him in raising money to have the first one installed in the U.S. in 2013.

Its simple idea is this:  provide a designated location to let people know you are looking for a friend, and offer others the opportunity to include or make a friend. Buddy Benches are popping up at elementary schools all over the country as part of a greater effort to promote inclusion.  School administrators and counselors use the purchase of a Buddy Bench as a teaching opportunity for decision making and empathy.

At All Recreation, we have been on the front lines of this movement, helping to create inclusive playgrounds for our communities.  We love this simple, yet effective, way to bring inclusive play to every playground.
