With soaring temperatures, shade has become a necessity when planning recreational projects. There are many different shade options to choose from, and as with many decisions today, the possibilities are endless. To help simplify the choices available, here is an overview of the different types of shade that can be added to your recreational space.

Single Post Shade: Provides coverage for a smaller footprint, includes a single post in the middle of the shade structure and comes in a variety of sizes and entry heights. They are made with powder coated posts and premium shade fabric in a wide array of color combinations.

Hip Shade: Covers larger areas with its four posts in a variety of sizes and entry heights. Think of covering for outdoor classrooms, fitness space, bleachers, playgrounds, etc. They are made with powder coated posts and premium shade fabric in a wide array of color combinations.

Rectangular Shade: Includes multiple posts and provides coverage in a rectangular shape. Perfect for over swing bays and stand-alone playground events. They are made with powder coated posts and premium shade fabric in a wide array of color combinations.

Sail Shades: Flexible fabric in either a rectangle or triangle anchored to posts providing a unique or architectural look. They can work well in uncommon layouts because of the flexibility of post positioning. Sail shades can also be combined together to achieve different looks. For example, BCI Burke offers their Ara sail shades in a variety of groupings: Poly, Chi, Clover and Hex.

Roofs and Toppers: These are incorporated into the playground design and bring play and visual interest to the air while also providing some shade coverage. They can be made with several different materials including premium shade fabric, powder coat, rotomolded plastic or HDPE.

Canopy Shades: These are built right into the play structure and provide for significant coverage over the equipment. They are made with powder coated posts and premium shade fabric in a wide array of color combinations.

Hypar Shade: Has one permanent post with a fabric sail that gives a 3D effect in its presentation. They are made with powder coated posts and premium shade fabric for the sail.

Shelters: These provide separate covered areas perfect for gatherings or community events. They give protection from the sun, shelter from weather events and can quickly become a focal point for the community. They come in a variety of styles and sizes and are typically made from steel and aluminum.
